Arita-yaki

Arita-yaki (Arita-porcelain) is a porcelain made in the town of Arita in Saga Prefecture, Japan.

In 1616 the Korean potter Ri Sanpei discovered the porcelain mineral kaolin at Mt. Izumiyama in Arita and for the first time porcelain could be made in Japan. Back then porcelain-ware made in Arita was shipped from a port in Imari which is why it was called "Imari-ware".
